Fourth Summer Playday Brings Competition to Newell Arena

Newell News Other Local News Sports

NEWELL—Young riders continue to take advantage of the opportunity to build their skills and gain experience during the 2026 Newell Family Summer Playday Series. The fourth gathering of the six-event summer series took place on July 6 under cooperative weather at the Newell Arena.

Youth ages 0-19 spent another Monday night working hard at honing their riding skills by showing up to either continue learning the patterns or taking the opportunity to practice full-speed competition runs in the arena.

There are a variety of events that take place inside and outside of the arena for all skill levels. Boys and girls compete against each other in all events except age 11-14 goat tying. Other events include barrel racing, pole bending, flag race, goat tying and goat tail untying, dummy roping, breakaway roping, dummy team roping and steer daubing.

Members must enter to compete in at least five of the six playday events to be eligible for year-end awards. However, anyone under age 19 can sign up and compete without being a member.

Contestants can sign up online at newellcommunityclub.com. Registration closes at 1 p.m. on the day of the event.

There are only two scheduled playdays left. The next one is scheduled for July 13 beginning at 5 p.m. If you want to participate or watch, the last remaining dates are July 13 and July 20, with the year-end potluck on July 27.
