Community Hits Blood Drive Goal in Newell

Newell News Other Local News

NEWELL—If giving blood saves lives, then those who volunteered to donate blood at the Newell blood drive did their part to help achieve that goal. Community members showed up ready to give a little of themselves to help others in need. Whatever It Takes Coalition hosted the blood drive on Monday, February 2.

The goal of the blood drive was to collect 23 units of blood. By the end of the day, that goal was successfully met with exactly 23 units obtained. Each donation can save up to three lives.

Having people donate their time and energy along with blood is so important and needed because there is no artificial substitute for human blood. Collecting blood from donors is essential for patient survival.

Vitalant was in charge of the event. Those who donated were able to receive a $15 gift card as a special thank you if they signed up for it when they registered for an appointment.

Turnout was good considering the time of year. According to Sabrina Harmon, WIT Director, they were pleased with the number of donors who participated despite seasonal illness and the Black Hills Stock Show being in full swing.

The event was held at Newell Christian Fellowship Church, located at 308 4th Street in Newell from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

It is estimated that someone in the United States needs blood every two seconds. For those who have not yet had a chance to donate but are interested in helping, more opportunities will be available in the near future. The next blood drive in Newell is scheduled for March 30, 2026 and will be hosted by the National Honor Society at the Newell School.
