BELLE FOURCHE—The Tri-State Museum offers many exciting, entertaining and educational programs throughout the year. January brought several different activities, including a class aimed at exploring January and the New Year. The class was geared for students in grades third, fourth and fifth and was held Saturday morning, January 24.

The educational morning was led by Samantha Comes, Program and Events Assistant. She shared that this was her first class she was teaching since taking over her current position and it took her about a week to prepare for the lessons. “Today we are going to learn about January in the New Year,” she explained. “So where did January come from? Janus was a Roman god with two faces…it is said that he had one face that looked into the past and another one that looked into the future. This is why January represents the beginnings of a new year.”

The morning started with a video about the story of the Roman god Janus, and after some discussion moved into another video about how to set New Year’s goals and how to make those goals attainable. Comes led an activity to help students set New Year’s resolutions. A take-home packet was given to participants.

If you have a student who is interested in participating in future classes, the next one will be February 21 and will explore groundhogs. Participants will get to make their own groundhog. Make sure you call the Museum and sign up for the class.

Up next for the Museum is the opening of their next temporary exhibit, called Our Town: Downtown Belle Fourche Through the Years. It will open Saturday, January 31 and run through May 22.
