Still Benefiting the Town

Newell News Other Local News

NEWELL-It was sad that the legendary building that has housed Newell’s local grocery store had the final day last week. But the heart of the owners, Howard (Howdy) Hobernicht and his wife Peggy, still desired to reach out to the residents of Newell by donating any remaining inventory to the NVN Food Bank.

Hobernicht has always had the back of the organizations and goings on in the NVN area. Whenever there was a special project or event going on, he was there to offer whatever he could to make it work.

On Friday, July 18, he once again lent a helping hand to those who need the use of the food bank. The volunteers of the food bank were on hand to load up the remaining merchandise consisting of canned goods, some refrigerated items, and miscellaneous items. All told, according to spokesperson Patty Karas, there were probably at least 30 boxes of much needed articles. It was at a time when the shelves of the food pantry were getting bare, according to Karas.

Newell’s food bank has been headed by Pastor Terri Blanchett for about nine years. During this time, in 2020, a new building was moved to the present area by the Dakota Life Christian Center at Fourth and Fisk Streets.

Recently, the ability to order commodities from other sources has become diffcult and has caused a shortage for those who need the bi-monthly distribution. The products from the closing of the New Mart are timely indeed.

Non-perishable food items can be brought to the pantry. Contact Pastor Terri Blanchett at Dakota Life Christian Center. Food distributions are every fourth Tuesday from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The new owner of the grocery store, Rod Peachy, has great plans for the building, beginning from the floor and up. Look for a new opening in the next few months. Peachy also owns Prairie Lane Farms north of Newell.
