Rain or Shine, Newell Playdays Roll On

Newell News Other Local News Sports

NEWELL—If you enjoy watching young competitors work hard while improving their skills, then Monday nights at the 2026 Newell Family Summer Playday Series are worth checking out. Contestants of all ages take part in a variety of events where they gain experience and confidence along the way.

The second and third Newell Playdays had two different types of weather, but both went on as planned.

The second one was met with some rain, but it went on as scheduled—no fair-weather cowboys and cowgirls in this bunch! Contestants ages 0 to 19 came out to participate in the playday on June 22.

The third weekly event, June 29, was a beautiful, warm, sunny evening and made for a little more pleasant playday competition.

Events inside and outside the arena continued both nights without a hitch. Barrels, poles, flag race, goat tying and goat tail untying, dummy roping, breakaway roping, dummy team roping and steer daubing saw good turnout as members must show up to compete in at least five (last week three was reported) of the six playday events to be eligible for year-end awards. However, anyone under age 19 can sign up and compete without being a member.

In most events boys and girls compete against each other. The age divisions are 0-3, 4-6, 7-10, 11-14 and 15-19.

A unique addition to the playday series is an event called Wildcard. If you enter this event, it changes each week. One week, it was Crepe Paper Races, and the next was Straight Line Flag Race with a Barrel turn added into the pattern. It is exciting to see what random event they will come up with next and how the youth handle the new event. All kids aged 7 to 19 compete together.

Sign up for each weekly contest is online and can be found at newellcommunityclub.com. Registration closes at 1 p.m. on the day of the event.

Newell Girls Basketball players served food during the evenings as a fundraiser for them.

With the series already hitting the halfway mark, there are only three scheduled playdays left. The next fun day is scheduled for July 6 beginning at 5 p.m. If you want to check it out, the dates left are July 6, July 13 and July 20, with the year-end potluck on July 27.
