NEWELL—As temperatures climbed to over 100 degrees, South Park offered a welcome escape from the heat with a variety of water activities and summer fun. On Saturday, July 11, the community was invited to participate in the Big Summer Blowout celebration at Newell City Park.

The park was filled with water activities that kept kids cooled off and entertained throughout the day. Two large tanks of water gave kids a place to fill water guns and have water fights, while sprinklers, water pads, deluxe slip n slides, mini pools and an 18-foot Hurricane Waterslide provided even more ways to have fun.

The waterslide was so popular that the steps to get to the top were backed up with kids all the way to the bottom, patiently waiting for their turn.

Adults were not forgotten! There were activities for them as well. One highlight was a car show with classic cars lined up along the south end of the park. The area had just enough trees that the owners of the cars could sit in the shade and visit with onlookers about their show vehicles.

Music filled the air and the day was a festive gathering. Laughter and giggles came from the kids splashing in the water while parents sat in the shade and visited with friends, family and neighbors.

The church ladies from Newell Christian Fellowship held a bake sale and Rollin in the Hills food truck was on-site serving up lunch.

Beginning at 1:30 p.m., the Newell Community Club hosted a Cornhole Tournament. Even in the heat, Cornhole players showed up to try to win the competition and some cash. In the end, Orlando Urioste and Jen Carda came out in first place with John Nelson and Dillon Nelson ending up second.
