NEWELL—A Junior at NHS believes she can follow her dreams and has set her goal on attending the National Youth Leadership Forum on National Security in Washington, DC this summer. The forum is set for July 5-12 at Georgetown University. Bailey Takes The Gun was nominated by a teacher, counselor, or through academic talent surveys. Bailey doesn’t know who nominated her, but is ready to attend the forum.

She received the invitation to the National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF) the last week of April and needs to raise over $4,000 by May 20 to attend. NYLF is a tuition-based summer enrichment program open to many students.

Bailey has high goals including learning sign language, Korean, and maybe becoming a traveling culinary chef. She loves electronics, science, and computers. Already with a long list of places she has traveled to, Bailey is looking forward to seeing more of the world.

Haley Garner, Bailey’s mom, knows she can go places and she’ll do whatever she sets her mind to do.

Haley and Roxie Castillo will be accompanying Bailey on the trip to Washington. The threesome will be staying with a host family.

The $4,000 may seem like an insurmountable amount, but Bailey is sure “I can do it!” and is asking community members to join in her dream. There will be donation containers on display around the NVN areaBJ’s Conoco, First National Bank, and other areas. Haley said that there will be some Tribal assistance, also.

Here is an opportunity to encourage a young student to reach higher and bring back lasting memories to share.

The sample schedule includes a myriad of learning forums and adventures. On the second day the keynote speaker is Jonna Mendez, a former Chief of Disguise for the CIA. There will also be a focus on launching a professional network and hearing from a representative from the US Department of State.

Day Three is a day of exploration hearing from the Department of State, US Naval Academy, Department of Homeland Security, and the Korean Center.

Day Four is the Day of Defense, Day Five a Day of Intelligence, Day Six National Security in Action and Day Seven a Day of Reflection and Remembrance.

Bailey will be going to the National Cemetery, National Mall, and hearing keynote speakers from several areas of national security.

Since 1992, the National Youth Leadership Forum: National Security has been hosted by Envision by WorldStrides, a nonpartisan educational organization.

During the eight days in Washington, DC, students test their judgment in the face of crisis and opposing views; hear from Internationally respected civilian policy-makers, military officers, members of the intelligence community, National Cemetery, the US State Department, a foreign embassy, or the US Department of Homeland Security.

The program is a college-level experiences and students may earn college credit.

Look for donation containers throughout the NVN area and help a student “Follow Her Dreams!”
