Clay Anderson Inducted into the SDIAAA Hall of Fame

Clay Anderson was recently inducted into the South Dakota Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Hall of Fame. The SDIAAA is dedicated to all the men and women who, through their efforts, have made interscholastic athletics a positive experience for student-athletes. Their work has brought honor to themselves, their school, community and the SDIAAA.

Clay is a veteran educator with a 35-year career in K-12 education, marked by dedication to teaching, coaching, and athletic administration. A 1978 graduate of McIntosh High School, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Education from Northern State University and began his career teaching and coaching numerous sports in McIntosh.

In the fall of 1992, Clay and his family moved to Belle Fourche as he took on the role of Activities Director for the Belle Fourche School District. During this time, he continued his professional growth by earning NIAAA Certified Athletic Administrator status and a master’s degree in educational administration.

Anderson contributed to many professional organizations during his career, serving on the SDHSAA Board of Directors, including Chairman, and held leadership roles within the SDIAAA and NIAAA, including SDIAAA President and Region 8 Representative.

His contributions have earned numerous honors, including multiple Region Athletic Director of the Year awards, the SDHSAA Distinguished Service Award, the NIAAA State Award of Merit, the Athletic Director of the Year, the Steve Berseth Professional Development Award, and induction into the Belle Fourche High School Hall of Fame.

Clay worked 26 years as Activities Director for the Belle Fourche School District retiring in 2019. He was supported in this role by his wife Melanie, also an educator for the Belle Fourche School District, who contributed 33 years and recently retired in May of 2025.

Clay resides in Belle Fourche and enjoys spending time with his family, golfing, fishing, doing yard work and home improvement projects. And you may still see Clay in the Belle Fourche High School gymnasium operating the shot clock for boys and girls basketball games. Congrats Clay!
