NEWELL—From the first notes of Five Green and Speckled Frogs to a flash mob finale, Newell students filled Austin Auditorium with music, dance, and art on the evening of March 26. The annual Spring Concert and Art Show featured performances from kindergarten through high school, leaving the audience clapping and singing along.

Leading the show was Newell Band and Music Director Kimberly Bachman. Marty Jump accompanied the performers on the piano.

Held in Austin Auditorium, the gymnasium was decorated with giant spring flowers to set the stage for a special spring program. The show began with the Kindergarten and First Graders taking the stage to sing Five Green and Speckled Frogs, Ants in Our Pants, and A Dinosaur Ate My Lunch.

Up next, the Third Grade stole the show with their recorders while they played Boogie Woogie. Following that number, the Second Grade joined them on stage to sing Almost Summertime, Bought Me a Cat, and Dont Need Riches.

Singing three songs, including Commercial Break, the Fourth and Fifth Grade took center stage. They sang an audience favorite, Take Me Out to the Ball Game, and Rock and Roll is Here to Stay. Their third number was announced to please stand by for a commercial break.” The students then sang a song about a variety of pies! At the end of the song, Bachman announced there was actually no pie—the audience booed!

The Middle School and High School Choir sang Dust in the Wind. Bachman accompanied them on the guitar. The audience was treated to special performances by flute player Bianca Bierman and lead guitar player Jonah Braning. They followed up that performance with Crazy Little Thing Called Love.

After all of the singing subsided, the Middle School and High School band began to play Mexican Clapping Song and Low Rider. The Fifth Grade band played When the Saints Go Marching In, featuring Erin McTaggart on the trumpet.

The Fifth Grade band challenged the MS/HS band to a Battle of the Bands, playing the same song and letting the audience pick the winner by applause. Both bands played extremely well. The Fifth Grade added choreographed movements that won the crowd over. They were overwhelmingly picked as the winners.

A special presentation was given to Mrs. Bachman. Her students surprised her with a banner, flowers, candy and a bunch of hugs. She is retiring, and the kids wanted her to know they will miss her.

The final number of the night was the grand finale, a flash mob! A few people started out on the gym floor dancing, and throughout the song, more and more students joined them until everyone was dancing. A good time was had by all. Bachman thanked everyone for coming and joining in on the fun!

Mrs. Reedys art classes displayed their work in the gym entry for parents, families, and friends to enjoy.
