Fresh Pies and New Updates at NVN Senior Center

Newell News Other Local News

NEWELL—If you ever get a hankering for a fresh homemade pie, the NVN Senior Center in Newell has you covered! The fourth Tuesday of every month is Pie Day! The Center hosted the monthly Pie Day on January 27.

Members of the Senior Center bake pies for the occasion. They start out with around ten pies and usually sell out by the end of the day. There is always a variety of pies to choose from at each sale. If pie isnt your thing, homemade caramel rolls are also available, along with coffee.

The regular monthly sale is a fundraiser for the Center. The members have been working hard raising funds to upgrade the building. They recently upgraded the roof, kitchen, ceiling, flooring, and paint, to name a few of the fixes.

The membership just got the news of damage to the bathroom. The floor has shifted and needs to be fixed. This expense will cost them approximately $5,000, so they are busy working to raise the money to cover this latest, and hopefully last, large expense. We are remodeling our restrooms—to the tune of $5,000—so we can really use the revenue,” explained Patty Karas, member. We need to grind that huge crack down—they will grind it down, and then level it out and then put new tile down.”

The good news is the problem is mostly cosmetic. So there’s nothing wrong with the foundation. The ground in Newell shifts all the time. This building was built on a cement pad, so once it gets a hairline crack, it just goes,” said Karas.

NVN Senior Center has a lot of plans for the new year. Mark your calendars and support the local facility if you can!

Every Monday night, beginning at 6 p.m., is Bingo night. On February 9, Bingo night will be extra festive as it is their Valentines Day celebration. In addition to regular bingo, there will be a chance to win a gift card to High Plains Restaurant and a raffle for a Valentines Day basket.

We have a lot of fun,” said Karas. We normally take a little break and everybody brings treats, and so we enjoy a little halftime treat and visit—its just really a nice, nice evening!”

The NVN Center hopes to have an Open House to encourage the public to come and see all of the new upgrades and renovations to the building. We hope to have an open house sometime in April, and let people know that we’ve got the place available for rent, for a reasonable price—and everything is ready to go! We’re really putting a lot of work into it,” explained Karas.

On May Day, the Center has a special event planned you wont want to miss! We are going to have a High Tea on May Day,” shared Karas. We are going to have a fundraiser on May Day. We’ll have a tea vendor and we’ll have a honey vendor, and then I hope to get someone that will come in and take pictures of us in fun hats. We will have our treats and we’ll have a backdrop in front of the piano!”
