BELLE FOURCHE—The Tri-State Museum offers a unique opportunity for families to come together and spend time learning about interesting topics and doing fun activities at the same time. This month’s program, All About Ice, was held on Sunday, January 18.
Grandparents and grandkids, moms, dads and kids, brothers and sisters, even aunts and uncles—everyone in the family is invited to participate in the Family Fun Day at the Museum.
The program started off with a short video that taught everyone about water and how it is the only natural substance on Earth found in the three common states of matter: solid, liquid and gas or vapor. It also explained how the energy and arrangement of the molecules changed with each form.
Following the video, everyone got to participate in a hands-on experiment. Using ice, a tin can, salt and a Styrofoam plate, everyone created frost around the outside of the can.
After that activity, families got to learn about the Ice Age and animals of the Ice Age. The activity that followed was a fun paper craft that resulted in the creation of a Woolly Mammoth.
An extensive take-home packet was provided that included interesting facts about ice, Ice Age crossword and word search puzzles, different types of ice such as dry ice, black ice and sea ice and many more facts and to-do activities.
One lucky child got to take home a book, as a book drawing is held at each monthly event.
Red Onion Marketplace coffee cupcakes and red heart cookies along with lemonade were provided.
The educational and informative hands-on learning experience is free with a museum membership or $2 per person without.
The next Family Fun Day is scheduled for February 15 beginning at 2 p.m.
If you have a child in the third, fourth or fifth grade, you will want to bring them to the Tri-State Museum next Saturday, January 24. They will learn all about January and the New Year. Fun topics like where did January get its name, who is the Roman god Janus and why does everyone make resolutions, along with much more, will be explored. Activities and crafts will be included along with the chance to win the book, New Year Around the World. Registration is required, so sign up now at (605) 723-1200.
