NEWELL—The boys high school football team topped off an action packed homecoming week by bringing home a big win—giving the week the perfect ending.
As the points on the scoreboard ticked higher, there was discussion in the crowd that focused on the last time the Irrigators won a homecoming football game. A few folks swore it has been 26 years, another said around 14 and yet another claimed it has been at least 10 years since victory was felt on homecoming.
However long it has been, it is safe to say that the wins have been elusive for the Newell Irrigators, but on this night—homecoming 2025—the ‘Gators brought home the win, and they did it with authority, beating the Edgemont Moguls 68 to 20.
Led by head coach Ryan Niman the team is made up of six players. They are Brent Tifft, Justin Stranberg, Kyle Kenstler, Flint Overholt, Liam Harms and Orrin Youngberg.
With this being only the second home football game this year, the home crowd was loud and eager to cheer on the team. Several of the games have been canceled this year as the squad plays 6-man football and finding opponents has been difficult.
The newly formed cheer team led the chants and yells and the recently crowned homecoming queen and king made their debut at halftime. They participated in the tradition of giving the football—a football autographed by the team—to the queen.
This game also marked the first time the brand new crow’s nest was in place and ready to use. Dean Johnson, owner of Truck Defender, and his crew brought in the building and set it up fast. It arrived just one day before the big game.
