She noted activities in the future with a trailer and information to be at the Newell Harvest Festival, October 31 in Newell and Fruit Sales have started in the area. Shining Star Awards Announced at School Board Meeting

NEWELL-The recipients of the Shining Star Awards were announced at the regular October School Board meeting. Primary Educator was given to Third Grade teacher Jesse Engel. Secondary Educator was handed to Mr. VanderVorst and Ms. Shirley. Shannon Dirk, Newell School Administrative Assistant was also noted as Newell School Shining Star. The beneficiaries of the award are student nominated and student voted.

Superintendent Dr. Pandi Pittman noted that the Newell Economic meeting will be held November 5 at 6 p.m. in the city hall. She added that Homecoming went well. Many people volunteered their time and effort to make it a success. Students and staff members joined in on the celebration all week.

The In-Service scheduled soon will have Sheriff Fred Lamphere in to discuss what’s happening in Butte County. Dennis Mez will also be going through the Emergency Management Plan. Staff will be giving suggestions that will go to the committee.

Once again, the Associated School Boards awarded the Newell School Board an award for their leadership during the school year.

Approval was voted on for the following policies: BDDH addressed the participation in school board meetings by the public. BD addressed school board meetings. IGB addressed Special Education and Related Services.

The first reading was held for the following policies: IKFA-Graduation Ceremony, students who have completed their senior year early are still able to walk during graduation. The portion of IKFA as written in the student handbook that states “Students that graduate early will not be permitted to walk in the graduation ceremony” will be struck from the handbook. Students are allowed to walk the graduation ceremony with the caveat that they are no other outstanding problems. The decision will be made by the Superintendent.

“This is just the first reading,” stated Dean Johnson in answer to some of the discussion on the making the final decision. Policy ABAD looks at Parents’ Rights. It has been added for clarity by the Associated School Boards of SD. It states that parents’ rights will be honored as long as they don’t interfere with standard school operations.

The members of the school board noted that the policy is already being followed, but the wording is necessary to comply with the Associated School Board wording. IGBA is a law that specifies that the school board can host voting, i.e. for a bond, and dates that the voting can be held.

Kristin Bonefield was appointed as ASBSD delegate. The resignation of Katie McTaggart as Assistant HS Volleyball coach was accepted and Dominic Santiago was hired in her place. His wage will be prorated to the end of the season. Stephen Simpson was hired as Middle School Assistant Basketball coach.

The next regular Newell School Board meeting will be held November 10 at 6 p.m.
