By R. Orion Thompson, Superintendent – Belle Fourche School District

The 2025 school year is off to a fantastic start! Our students, staff, and community have come together with great energy, and we are already seeing positive results.

Belle Fourche Learning Innovations

One of the most exciting developments is the launch of Belle Fourche Learning Innovations (BFLI). Designed to meet students where they are in their learning journey, BFLI is already creating opportunities for families who need flexibility while showing that our District is committed to innovation.

Master Planning and Growth

We recently concluded our CO-OP Master Planning partnership, which created a clear and sustainable pathway for District improvement. This plan will help us address facility needs, enhance program offerings, and strengthen both student and staff experiences for years to come.

Welcoming New Board Members

Please join me in welcoming Mr. Travis Featherston and Mr. Jake Davis to the Belle Fourche School Board. Their leadership will help us continue moving forward with purpose.

Superintendent’s Goals

This year, my work will focus on three priorities:

• Advancing the Master Plan to keep momentum on long-term facility and program improvements.

• Building a Growth-Oriented Evaluation System that supports collaboration and professional learning across the District.

• Policy Review and Alignment to ensure our practices remain up to date with legislative changes and best serve our community.

Did You Know?

Preparing students for a successful future means nurturing both theiracademic growth and their social-emotional development. Research shows that when students build skills like empathy, problem-solving, and resilience, they not only improve academically but also develop the confidence and adaptability needed for adulthood (CASEL, 2023; Learning Policy Institute, 2018). Small struggles in childhood, whether tackling a tough lesson or navigating friendships, become valuable learning opportunities when supported by caring adults. These moments help children develop the resilience that makes long-term success more attainable. Together, by focusing on academics, innovation, and social growth, we are building a District where every student can thrive.
