NEWELL—Labor Day was full of fun in Newell, with the Labor Day Parade in the morning and the Labor Day Rodeo in the afternoon.
At 10 a.m., floats made their way down Girard Ave., tossing out candy to the little ones and sounding their horns or playing music. Float decorations were in line with the theme, “Small Town with a Big Heart.” Newell High School alumni came together to celebrate their class reunions. The community band played live music on their float, and some local businesses also had floats to both advertise and be part of the community fun.
The Labor Day Rodeo started at 1 p.m. Attendees enjoyed covered grandstands with a temporary cover donated by Levi and Cierra McTaggart. The sky was clear and the weather was warm. In between rodeo events, there were some fun activities such as the Boot Scramble for kids under 10, Mutton Bustin’, and Sheep Teepeeing. In the Boot Scramble, the kids had to take their boots off.
The boots were then taken to the other end of the arena and separated. The first boy and first girl to run down, find their pair of boots and run back won the event. And all of the participants got a certificate for a free Sno-Cone!
For the third year in a row, Newell’s very own High Plains Restaurant donated the prize All Around saddle. High Plains owner Shelby Scheulke has been an avid supporter of the Newell Community Club and her donation of a saddle each year has boosted the Labor Day Rodeo.
