The City Council held its second meeting of the month on Monday, July 21. During community input, Raymond Allen expressed concerns about the inability to hear weather sirens in his area, overgrown weeds, and a growing mosquito problem. He also raised an issue with the incomplete sidewalk at 1340 Dacar Street.
The Chamber of Commerce reported that the Heroes Honor Ride comes through Sunday, August 3, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. behind the museum. They are looking for vendors and marketing materials from any local business.
The Library reported that Story Time drew 100 attendees on July 1, and 500 participants have signed up for the Summer Reading Program.
The Council gave a July Budget Update.
Councilperson Elliott requested excusal from meetings August 20 through August 29, 2025.
Councilperson Capp gave an update on his SDML conference in Pierre. The state is covering $7 million in cybersecurity upgrades for cities, including ours, to address internet vulnerabilities at no cost. This may include new routers, Wi-Fi, and a switch to .gov email addresses for added security. He also joined the SDML Taxation and Revenue Policy Committee to learn more and help represent municipal interests at the state level.
City Engineer Brent Hardy gave several updates. The Airport Board recommends renewing KLJ’s five-year contract following the selection committee’s scoring, allowing them to move forward with 2026 projects. At the STIP meeting in Rapid City, Hardy raised the need for turn lanes on Hat Ranch Drive—they may do another traffic count. Lastly, the contractor for the Highlands State Park project is mobilizing July 21, with a kickoff meeting set for July 22.
Public Works Director Ryan Stedillie shared that Belle Fourche has been chosen to host the Junior Legion Baseball Tournament, scheduled for July 28 and 29 at the new facility. The city received the exciting news last week following the submission of coach nominations.
The next City Council meeting will be held on August 4 at 6 p.m.
