BELLE FOURCHE—Imagine being able to eat waffles on the go, not having to sit down to enjoy, but on a stick! Waffles on a stick are just one of the food offerings provided by The Food Addiction food truck that made its debut during the grand opening of the Dinosaurs of Hell Creek Museum on May 22.
Owners of the new business are Ashley and Jeremy Spilman of Spearfish. They chose the name The Food Addiction so they could offer a variety of their favorite foods without being tied to just one. “We’re just trying to do a little bit of all of our best foods that we love. We have a lot of different things that we love, so that way, we can kind of try to do a little bit of everything,” explained Jeremy.
Their mutual love for food has made the leap to food truck ownership an easy choice. “Well, we always have loved food and always wanted to do it,” said Jeremy.
This new food truck adventure affords the couple the ability to be at home more for their kids. Ashley said, “we have four sons ages six, eight, ten and 17.” And brings about a much anticipated career change. “I’m actually an underground miner, I’ve been doing that for 25 years. I just wanted to be home more because we got four kids at home and they’re all in sports,” explained Jeremy. “I just left Alaska on Tuesday. I was gone for 22 days at a time and home for eight days, so it’s just kind of something we’ve been wanting to do.”
In addition to dough batter waffles, the food truck is also offering burgers. “We have a chopped burger, it’s on a hoagie roll and it’s actually—I call it a poor man’s Philly—it’s a burger and cheese and onions mixed up and then I chop it all up and it’s served on a hoagie roll,” said Jeremy.
Feedback after their first evening was positive. “We did really good last night, really good! People told us they thought our burger was the best burger West River,” shared Jeremy. “I think everything went pretty great, I mean, we didn’t have the straw organizer, but everything else was pretty good,” added Ashley.
The couple plans to offer their food to the Northern Hills area, you can find them at local events. “We do a private graduation party next and then we are going to be at Indian Motorcycle during rally, and we’re going to do the Music on Main in Sturgis,” said Ashley.
