BELLE FOURCHE–Homecoming at Belle Fourche High School brought students, families and community members together on Friday, Sept. 18 as the Broncs hosted the Hot Springs Bison.
The football game opened with a scoreless first quarter, with neither team able to find the end zone.
Hot Springs took the lead before halftime and went on to defeat Belle Fourche 21-0.
But for many of the students gathered at the game, one of the most anticipated moments of the evening came at halftime.
The Belle Fourche High School band performed for the crowd before attention turned to one of the school’s annual homecoming traditions: the Burning of the B.
The Belle Fourche Fire Department oversaw the event and assisted homecoming royalty Austey Stiefvater and Gabe Raba as they set the “B” ablaze. As the crowd waited for the fire to begin, students gathered along the track and gradually inched closer to the spectacle.
The Burning of the B has become a signature part of Belle Fourche’s homecoming celebration, giving spectators a little something extra to look forward to each year beyond the football game itself.
Friday’s loss moved Belle Fourche to 0-4 on the season, while Hot Springs improved to 1-3.
For one night, though, the scoreboard was only part of the homecoming story. The band, the royalty, the community and a crowd of increasingly eager students all came together for a tradition that has become part of what makes homecoming in Belle Fourche its own event.
