The high school track and field team had a select few athletes qualify for the prestigious Howard Wood Dakota Relays meet hosted in Sioux Falls on May 1st and 2nd. This year’s qualifiers were Gabe Raba in discus, Gavin Pearson in 400 meter run, and the boys 4×400 team of Gavin Pearson , Caeyn Howard , Griffen Biehl , and Slater Humbracht. For the Lady Broncs, Mya Nowowiejski qualified in the 400 meter run, Ansley O’Brien in the 100 meter hurdles and high jump, Rhys Pearson in the 1600 meter run and 3200 meter run and the girls 4×100 and 4×200 meter team of Jazlyn Olson, Ansley O’Brien, Mikka Dunavant, and Mya Nowowiejski, and the sprint medley team of Jazlyn Olson, Mikka Dunavant, Mya Nowowiejski, and Rhys Pearson.
All of the Bronc athletes made their mark at the meet, many coming home with new spots on leaderboards. Gavin Pearson ran a season best in the 400 meter with a time of 51.58, “placing him 17th overall against some of the best sprinters in three or four states,” says Coach Wattier. He is currently number 7 in South Dakota Class A. Rhys Pearson made an incredible accomplishment earning a new school record in the girls 3200m run with a time of 11:17.14. This moves her into first place in school history! Ansley O’Brien ran a personal best in the 100m Hurdles with a time of 15.88. This puts her in the top 10 in South Dakota Class A. Our girls Medley team of Jaz Olson, Mikka Dunavant, Mya Nowowiejski, and Rhys Pearson placed 6th in the Sprint Medley, this was a season best, just missing the school record by about half a second and moved them to third all-time in Belle Fourche history. The girls 4x100m Relay of Jaz Olson, Ansley O’Brien, Mikka Dunavant, and Mya Nowowiejski placed 6th, only losing to one other team from South Dakota.
The high school track and field team has a JV meet in Sturgis on the 5th, the Black Hills Classic in Sturgis on May 9th at 9am, and three more meets in the upcoming weeks.
