BELLE FOURCHE—Sometimes, helping someone in need means just as much to those lending a hand as it does to those receiving it. That was certainly the case on October 30, when the Monument Health United Way Volunteer Team joined forces with Allied Construction Roofing, Siding & Gutters, Mead Lumber of Spearfish and B&S Dumpsters to provide a new roof for a community member.
The project started with a late-evening text requesting a quote. Less than 10 hours later, Brett Ross of Allied Construction called with an offer to donate the labor. He had also arranged for Mead Lumber to donate the supplies and B&S Dumpsters to provide a dumpster, according to a Facebook post by Nikki Hoyme.
The businesses, along with United Way volunteers, came together in a coordinated effort for a full day of hard work, tearing off the old roofing materials, hauling away the debris and installing new shingles. Members of the volunteer team also provided lunch, snacks and drinks to keep everyone going throughout the day. What started as a simple request for a quote turned into a community effort, with everyone pitching in to help get the job done.
Those involved weren’t looking for recognition for their efforts. They simply saw a need and stepped up to help a fellow community member. Hoyme thanked everyone who made this project happen and said seeing people coming together to help complete strangers was truly heartwarming.
