This year, over 450 job seekers interacted with more than 70 employers looking to hire in the Black Hills.
Employers had access to interview booths to offer on the spot opportunities. Job seekers who completed the exit survey reported the event met their expectations.
Of those surveyed, at least 50% indicated they were unemployed and looking for full-time opportunities.
The Belle Fourche Beacon who has been in communication with the communities of Sturgis and Box Elder about helping their communities to organize weekly newspapers in each.
Sturgis lost its local newspaper in 2017 at the same time the RC Journal closed the Belle Fourche Post & Bee.
The closure led to the development of the “Beacon” which began publication June 28, 2018. This issue marks the 9th calendar year of publication and the 9th issue in 2026.
Box Elder in the history of the town has never had a “local” newspaper.
The Beacon attended the BH Job fair to better gauge the interest in pursuing local journalism from applicants hoping to secure employment in those areas.
The response was strong and we came away with 15 applicants that had a wide variety of experience and interest, including: Graphic Design, reporting, ad sales, accounting, proofreading, editing.
The Beacon’s booth for applicant assistance was aided by Box Elder Mayor, Larry Larson.
A process of following up with each of the applicants is underway.
The Beacon in this age of electronic and online communication has understood that the demand and interest in news closest to home is still there and possibly stronger than ever.
