Firemen’s BBQ Sees Large Turnout

NEWELL—The annual Fireman’s Barbecue saw another huge turnout at the Newell Fire Hall for its Labor Day Weekend fundraiser.

For around 20 years now, the Fire Hall has hosted the festive event during the Newell Labor Day Celebration; before that, it was held during Father’s Day.

This year, the hall was packed with people braving the chilly weather to support the fire department while enjoying barbecue sandwiches, chips, drinks, and potato salad.

Fire Chief Verl Tifft, who has been a firefighter for 22 years, said that funds raised from the barbecue go “anywhere from purchasing new trucks to PPE gear.”

The fire department will also be at the Festival of Trees in December to raise funds and split the money between other small fire departments in the area.

Tifft expressed gratitude for the support of the local community. “If it wasn’t for them, these doors wouldn’t be open,” said Tifft. “Without the support of community, nothing works.
