NEWELL—The Newell Board of Commissioners held its monthly meeting on August 11 at 5 p.m. The Economic Development Committee reported that there is a meeting scheduled for August 20 at 6 p.m. to be held at City Hall. Commissioner Clausen made a motion to waive the rental fee for this meeting; the motion carried.

Sabrina Harmon gave an update as well as information on moving the WIT office from the school to Newell Christian Fellowship.

In the Mayor’s Report, Mayor Tara Tennis gave an update regarding the road grader—more repairs are needed.

Several nuisance violations were discussed. Motions were made to approve taking legal action on 313 3rd Street and Amherst Avenue (lots 3, 4, 5, 6, addition 1601); issuing fines on pet violations at 114 S. Fisk Avenue; sending a nuisance letter regarding licensing camper; and moving forward with action on 203 Ash Street. All motions carried.

Building permits were approved for 120 Harvard and 218 Dartmouth Avenue.

Mayor Tennis, Finance Officer Larson and Commissioner Mackaben will attend the SDML Annual Conference in Pierre.

Commissioner Mackaben made a motion to donate $500 to the Newell Fire Department for operating the beer tent at the Rodeo Grounds for Labor Day. The motion carried.

There was brief discussion on the possibility of a holding facility for animals, as well as attendance to the LEPC Safety Day in Belle Fourche on August 23.

Citizens expressed concern about a metal plate protruding along the sidewalk. There was also a complaint about one of the properties on 3rd Street, and a suggestion and discussion about branch pickup.

The Board went into executive session to discuss personnel 1-25-2(1) at 6:18 p.m. Mayor Tennis declared to return to regular session at 6:32 p.m. with no action taken.

Commissioners discussed a public disturbance issue, as well as the next branch pickup.

The meeting adjourned at 6:43 p.m. The next regular Commissioner meeting will be September 8 at 5 p.m.
