BELLE FOURCHE—The Belle Fourche School Board held a meeting on Monday, August 11 at the new time of 5:30 p.m.
Mark Sprigler gave a presentation on behalf of the Middle School Math and Science Club regarding the yearly class trip to Disney World in Orlando, FL. He explained fundraising efforts and financial planning for this year’s trip, noting that up to 35 students typically go on the trip.
The Board approved his request for a trip this year.
High school principal Mathew Raba reported on enrollment numbers for this year, noted that freshman orientation would take place August 13, and stated that the high school would again be holding their new teacher induction program this year.
Kevin Smidt, middle school principal, reported that homeroom assignments would be posted on the west entrance doors August 11. He noted that on August 13, the middle school had an open house.
A special orientation for 5th graders was held in the gym starting at the same time as the open house. Julie Hatling, elementary principal reported on enrollment, saying that right now the numbers change daily and are fluctuating.
This year, the school will continue working with the BFPD to maintain changes made to parking, drop-off and pickup processes at South Park. A parent open house at North and South Park was August 13. The first day of school was August 14.
Adam Nowowieiski of the Activities Department reported that the new digital ticketing system has been well received by parents and fans. Summer was packed full of camps, open gyms, and summer workouts. The department is in search of an announcer and scorekeeper for soccer. Once volleyball practice started on August 14, all activities are in full swing.
Tommy Coyle, Facilities and Transportation Director reported that he is happy with the overall state of the facilities.
The custodian and summer crew worked very hard all summer. All buses have been inspected and are ready for the school year.
Superintendent Orion Thompson gave updates on the BFLI situation, noting that there are 23 kids in the program.
Superintendent Goals will be presented in September. Good things are brewing for upgraded educational opportunities in the BFLI as well as capital projects for stronger infrastructure and more desirable learning environments for kids and staff.
In their search for a new board member, the Board then interviewed five candidates for the open position. Interviews were public and lasted about ten minutes each.
The next School Board Meeting will be Monday, September 8 at 5:30 p.m.
