The Belle Fourche School Board held its monthly meeting on Monday, March 10. During Open Forum, a concerned parent spoke to the Board about the lack of utilization of schoolbooks and teachers speaking negatively to students.
Mike Walker of NeighborWorks gave a presentation about housing in Butte County.
Student Council senior representative Harvey Walden reported that the Council registered for the state convention and will be attending April 1 and 2 at the Monument in Rapid City. The Council also went to the Capitol and watched general sessions, went to committee meetings, and got photos with senators, representatives and Governor Larry Rhoden. The Council’s next big project will be preparing for the Man Pageant scheduled at the end of the month, where they plan to hold a bake sale and all proceeds raised will go to the Children’s Miracle Network at the Monument in Rapid City.
Middle schoolers will travel to Rapid City for a tour of Western Dakota Tech on March 18. There will also be a choir concert at the Rec center at 6:30. On March 20, the math and science club will sponsor a school dance in the multi-purpose room. The regional science fair competition will be held March 25 at the School of Mines in Rapid City. 26 BFMS students will attend. The Math & Science Club will leave for Florida on April 1 and return April 5. Two middle school teachers will be participating in the Literacy Blueprint course project being created by Compass. Both Penny Louks and Reva Potter will be filmed on March 11 as they teach literacy related lessons.
The High School will be administering the South Dakota Assessment for Learning to the juniors in the areas of English, Math, and Science on April 7-10. The National Honor Society induction ceremony will be held March 24 at 7 p.m. in the Ed Petranek Armory. Mr. Webb will be taking interested students to Western Dakota Tech for a visit and camp on March 20. The camp highlights all of the programs they offer. Prom will take place April 12 with grand march beginning at 7 p.m. and the dance taking place from 8-11 p.m. Mathew Raba attended the National Advocacy Conference in Washington D.C. with six other principals from South Dakota on March 10-13.
The Board appointed Kelly Keegan as its Board of Equalization member, with Mike as her alternate.
February’s students of the month were recognized. 5th grade: Talia Thompson and Reid Somervold. 6th grade: Mea Daniels and Tristan Wishard. 7th grade: Tayleigh Wooldridge and Jace Olson. 8th grade: Ansley O’Brien and Owen Hatling.
The Board noted that if a regular election was not conducted because there was neither a contested vacancy on the school board nor any question submitted to the voters, the school board shall provide that information in the school board minutes.
There will be a special school board meeting on March 31.
