BELLE FOURCHE—Residents at Judy’s Assisted Living Center enjoyed a morning of food, fellowship, and heartfelt conversation on Thursday as volunteers from St. James Lutheran Church, Belle Fourche, South Dakota, continued their monthly outreach tradition. The gathering, known as “Cookies and Chatter,” has been a cherished ministry for the past three years.
Each first Thursday of the month, the ladies of St. James Lutheran Church arrive with homemade treats and warm smiles, spending time visiting with residents who often have limited social interaction. Their visits include shared snacks, friendly conversation, and scripture readings that offer comfort and companionship. Residents of Judy’s Assisted Living Center, located in Belle Fourche, say the time together is a welcome break from their daily routine. This week’s visit featured cherry cheesecake, watermelon, cantaloupe, and homemade fudge served in the dining area. Conversations centered on gratitude and the importance of kindness, encouraging residents to reflect on small joys and the value of connection.
“We come here to remind them they’re not forgotten,” said ministry coordinator Genevieve Skogberg, who has helped organize the monthly visits since the program began. “A simple conversation or sharing a meal can brighten someone’s entire week. Our ladies are dedicated to these special visits, and we are honored to spend time with each other.”
Center manager Judy Riedel, RN, said residents eagerly anticipate each visit, often asking, “Are they coming?” She described the gatherings as a time of togetherness—sharing stories, enjoying food, and building a sense of family within the center. Staff members assist residents throughout the event, helping create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
“I can’t thank St. James Lutheran Church enough for the energy and effort they bring when visiting our residents. It is always a special day,” one center aide said.
St. James Lutheran ladies will continue the tradition of “Cookies and Chatter,” as residents of Judy Assisted Living Center look forward to the first Thursday of each month.
