Losing Some Shade for New Sidewalks

Newell News

On June 23, 2025 crews from Central Specialties, Inc., contracted under the South Dakota DOT, began to make sidewalk and ADA improvements on Dartmouth Ave in Newell. The work began with tree removal and trimming along the route. Once the tree removal is completed, crews will tackle the process of replacing the sidewalk and constructing ADA improvements.

Construction equipment and workers will be adjacent to the roadway and drivers are cautioned to be aware of the workers. There may be minor delays, as well as intermittent lane closures with flaggers and some existing parking areas may be temporarily blocked.

This project is part of a larger overall construction project that will install new asphalt surfacing from Nisland to Newell, reconstruction of the southern intersection of Highways 212 and 79, which includes improving the intersection, and updating the sidewalk through Newell for increased accessibility.

The timeline for the project is scheduled for June through November 2025, at a cost contracted at $8.1 million.
