City Council held its second meeting of the month on Monday, June 16. In the Mayor’s Report, Mayor Randy Schmidt gave an executive proclamation declaring June 28, 2025 as Performing Arts Day in Belle Fourche. “The City of Belle Fourche recognizes the importance and impact that the performing arts have on the cities, towns, townships, census-designated places, and unincorporated communities of Butte County,” Schmidt said. “Belle Fourche has a long history of contributing to the performing arts in the Northern Black Hills, such as the Belle Fourche Arts Council, the Belle Fourche Concert Association, the Belle Fourche Cowboy Band, the Tri-State Performers, and especially the Belle Fourche Area Community Theater.”

There was no community input at this meeting.

Stacy Raisanen of the Center of the Nation Business Association (CoNBA) reported on recent events, including the Cars and Coffee event and the Show and Shine event. She highlighted the community’s positive response.

Lee Capp with the Library board provided updates on the library, reporting record-breaking attendance at the recent magic show and a high number of visitors in June.

The Council acknowledged the Belle Silver Lining’s upcoming raffle for a Henry Golden Boy Lever Action 22 Long Rifle. Ticket sales will begin July 1, 2025. All proceeds will go toward Belle Silver Lining operational expenses. Contact Rita M. Bollwitt at (605) 892-6285 for more information.

A June Budget update was given.

City Administrator Jason Lafayette gave updates on the pitless unit and water loop. Well #3 has an estimated delivery date of June 30. Installation should follow shortly after it arrives. The water loop has been live for a week as of June 16, and with no complaints so far, seems to be working as intended.

Public Works is also working to get back to full staffing and get the Rodeo Grounds ready for the Roundup.

City Engineer Brent Hardy gave updates on the EDC’s housing meeting recently. There was notable discussion around short-term rentals AirBNBs, VRBOs, and similar. That topic is scheduled for discussion at the June 18 Planning & Zoning meeting, where the committee will begin working on updating rules and regulations for those types of rentals.

Public Works Director Ryan Stedillie gave updates on the mosquitoes; they are being sprayed, weather permitting. The wind needs to be below 10 miles per hour for workers to spray safely. Once conditions are right, two sprayers will be sent out to cover more of the town.

The next City Council meeting will be July 7 at 6 p.m.
