Jim Thompson nominated for 2025 National Rodeo Hall of Fame

STURGIS – You may not recognize Jim Thompson at first glance, but the moment he speaks, his deep, unmistakable voice leaves no doubt — he’s a man who’s spent a lifetime behind the microphone.

A familiar voice in both rodeo arenas and on the airwaves, Thompson, now retired, spent his life serving his country, his community, and the sport of rodeo.

The longtime rodeo announcer, has been nominated for the 2025 National Rodeo Hall of Fame.

He is a finalist, one of 12, for the prestigious National Cowboy Hall of Fame, with six individuals being inducted.

Thompson’s career spans decades as a rodeo announcer, including experience in the military and broadcast in the Dakotas. He has announced at major rodeo finals, including the PRCA National Finals, Circuit Finals, and more. Thompson is also a member of the South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame, the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo Hall of Fame, and a recipient of the Tom Brokaw Award.

Since 1975, Thompson has announced professional rodeos in more than three dozen states. His leadership extended beyond the arena. He served as President of the Watertown Chamber of Commerce, the South Dakota Broadcasters Association, and was elected two terms in the South Dakota State Senate.

His accolades include induction into five halls of fame already, including the Casey Tibbs Rodeo Hall of Fame, South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame, and South Dakota Broadcasters Hall of Fame. He was also named Pro Rodeo Committeeman of the Year for his work in Kaycee, Wyo.

Born in North Dakota and raised in Oregon, he now resides in Sturgis with his wife, Sherry.
A U.S. Army veteran, he began his military career as a military policeman at Rocky Mountain Arsenal and later served with Armed Forces Korea Network Television and Radio.

A member of the Black Hills Cowboy Church, he continues to serve his community as a member of the Sturgis City Council.

Incidentally, Jim will be the announcer for the steer roping on July 3rd as part of the Black Hills Round Up.
