House Plants Bring Consumers to Dakota Petals

BELLE FOURCHE—A huge house plant sale drew people to downtown Belle Fourche on April 5. The Chamber of Commerce received calls asking what the heck was happening on State Street? All of the excitement was at Dakota Petals Flower Shop.

Erica Douglas, shop owner, said she was looking for ways to make her flower shop stand out and house plants came to mind. “I was thinking about plants and I was thinking about all the rare varieties that we never get up here and I said let’s go to work! I started calling growers and making connections happen,” she said.

Douglas started with a smaller order of around 300 plants and then quickly expanded her order to offer over 1300 plants with 100 plus varieties. The shop has everything from African Violets and succulents to terrarium plants and air plants and everything in between!

The store made sure to offer the house plants at affordable prices. “I priced them to move, that’s what it’s all about—no point in ordering in plants if they are going to sit here—let’s move them,” said Douglas.

Turnout was significant and the store was busy all day. The line to check out was long but excited consumers remained patient and by noon over half of the stock was gone.

“I’m so excited to have done this,” exclaimed Douglas. “I’ve been working with so many growers and so many suppliers to bring in the things that plant lovers need and want!”

The success of the event has made Douglas start planning the next big plant sale. “We’re going to have a rare plant sale in May and I’m already talking to growers about big sale in October that will be similar to this,” she explained.

As Douglas continues to settle into her new location on State Street and works on spreading the word about her new business, she takes time to appreciate all she has. “I’m just thrilled to be here, I’m thankful to God for everything that he’s done in my life! I’m thankful for this building, and I’m so thankful for this business! I’m just so happy! Thank you Belle Fourche!”
