The Thursday before Easter, April 17 this year, is often celebrated as “Holy Thursday” or “Maundy Thursday.” This day commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with his disciples. During this time he established Communion and gave the commandment to love one another. Before his capture and death, Jesus shared one last supper with his disciples, on the day of the Passover Seder.
He shared bread and wine, symbolizing his body and blood. And in an act of humility he washed the feet of his disciples.
Maundy comes from the Latin “mandatum” which means “commandment.” Holy Thursday is then also known as Maundy Thursday because it is associated with the washing of the disciples’ feet when Jesus gave the new commandment.
Once again, this year the community of Newell will celebrate Holy Thursday with a potluck meal and gathering for fellowship. The potluck will begin at 6 p.m. at Newell City Hall, Thursday, April 17.
Meat, roasted potatoes, dinner rolls, drinks and plates and utensils will be furnished. Please bring a side-dish, salad, or dessert to share.
The event is open to everyone and will give us the opportunity to come together to renew friendships. It will be a time of hope, health, and love. Communion will be offered.
Please join us in celebrating the Easter season!
