Betty Bruner NEWELL-Longstanding members of the Newell Ambulance crew were honored recently at the annual banquet held Friday, February 21 at High Plains Restaurant.
Calvin Fickbohm has served as the ambulance treasurer for 10 years, Don Tishmack has served the community for over 50 years, and Sherry Hocking was given a special honor for being supportive from keeping everyone’s passwords to anything that is needed.
February 22, 2025 was proclaimed as Donald Tishmack Day in Newell. The proclamation was read and presented by Newell Mayor Tara Tennis and is found at the end of this article. The Newell Ambulance crew is staffed by volunteer EMTs and EMT1s who have invested their time, efforts, and money to maintain skills that provide high quality care.
The Newell Ambulance has been designated as a SD Cardiac Ready Community. During a cardiac emergency, every second – every minute that passes without CPR or AED use can mean the difference between life and death. It can take an ambulance more that 30 minutes to respond in our remote areas.
The Cardiac Ready Community Programs equip and empower local members to be better prepared in helping someone experiencing a cardiac event before the ambulance arrives. The Newell Ambulance crew has worked diligently under the supervision of Director Sherry Hocking to provide training to over 130 community members.
