Newell Elementary is in the first year implementing Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).  MTSS is a framework used in education to provide varying levels of support to students based on their individual needs. It’s designed to address both academic and behavioral challenges students may face.

MTSS typically consists of three tiers when completely implemented.  Newell Elementary will be focused on Tier 1 with Universal Support. This tier provides support to all students within the general education classroom. It focuses on evidence-based practices that benefit the entire student population. Tier 1 interventions may include differentiated instruction, positive behavior reinforcement strategies, and universal screenings to identify students who may need additional support.

The school will focus on Tier 2 and 3 in year two with Targeted Support and Intensive Support. Students will receive more individualized support with small groups and individual interventions at these two levels.   These interventions are more intensive and focused than Tier 1, but they are still delivered within the general education setting.

MTSS emphasizes early intervention and data-driven decision-making to ensure that students receive the appropriate level of support. By implementing this tiered approach, Newell school can effectively meet the diverse needs of the student population and improve outcomes for all students.

Newell Middle School will use a modified version of MTSS.  Students will receive grade level instruction for reading.  At the end of the first quarter, students will be evaluated according to reading needs and if intervention is needed, will be grouped for specific instruction.  The goal is to ensure that all students in middle school go on to high school with the reading skills necessary to be successful.  Parents, guardians, and students will have access to the reading assessments developed with Front Bridge to see the targeted reading needs.

Newell School District plans to provide an opportunity for all students to develop the literacy skills needed to be successful within the classroom as well as the venture after graduation.  Reading is an important skill and develops confidence to reach for the stars of life.
