Nathan Parker Neilan, 82, of Newell, South Dakota died August 8, 2024 at the Department of Veterans, Fort Meade, SD.

Nathan was born in Burke, South Dakota on December 2, 1941 to Paul and Lorna (Stoltenberg) Neilan.  His first job was a newspaper delivery route within the town of Burke.  After the passage of his grandmother summers were spent on his grandfather’s farm at Brentford, SD doing all aspects of farm labor.

Having graduated 12 years of school at Burke, SD he joined the Navy in 1959 with 4 accompanying high school classmates.  Nathan was honorably discharged in 1962 from the Naval ship duty in the submarine division.

While stationed in Key West, Florida Nathan married Nancy Litzie.  To this union 4 children, Angela, Nathan Jr., Deene and Terry were born.  Nathan worked various construction projects.

In 1966, the family moved back to the town of Burke, SD where Nathan continued working construction in town and across the State of South Dakota.  In 1985 Nathan married Roxanne (Viken) Silvernagel and the couple began farming and ranching together.  They owned and operated a convenience store in Nisland and after selling the farm they operated a local bar in Nisland.  Nathan was chairman of the Town Board and accomplished the replacement of water and sewer lines and building of a new lagoon.

He is survived by his wife, Roxanne Neilan of Newell; children, Angela (Dave) Sheetz of Parkston, SD, Nathan Jr. (Cathy) Neilan of Illinois, Andrew “Deene” Neilan of Florida and Terry Lee (Sarah) Neilan of Sioux Falls; 8 grandchildren and several great grandchildren; brother, Geary Neilan of Sioux Falls, SD; sisters, Etta Mae Payne of Florida, Coreen “Peggy” Shenefeld of Colome, SD and Sandra Kay Whiteman of Powell, WY.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Angela Nancy Neilan; brothers, H. Deene Neilan and Michael Arthur Neilan; sisters, Pauline Arand, Lorna Del Neilan and Ann Marie Lindworm.

A nontraditional funeral will be held with Nathan’s oldest son, Nathan Jr. as MC on Wednesday, August, 21 at 10:30 am at Kline Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche.  A memorial service and Inurnment will take place at a later date at the Graceland Cemetery in Burke, South Dakota.

A lunch will follow the funeral at the NVN Center in Newell, South Dakota.
