For Charles Capp and his son Lee Capp both of Belle Fourche, a recent trip to Washington DC was indeed an unforgettable experience. Charles, or Chuck as he is known by friends and family served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. “Several of my uncles serve in various branches and since then my son, son-in-law, grandson, and granddaughter have also served.”

He learned about the honor flight program when two of his uncles were able to visit the memorials in Washington, DC. They encouraged Chuck to apply.

The Honor Flight Network, is a philanthropic organization whose motto fits their philosophy, “Since America felt it was important to build a memorial to the service and the ultimate sacrifice of her veterans, the Honor Flight Network believes it’s equally important that veterans have the opportunity to visit their memorial”  Top priority is given to America’s most senior heroes — World War II era veterans, and any veteran with a terminal illness. The program will naturally transition to Korean War, Vietnam War and all other veterans who served, on a chronological basis.

On May 21st 2024 Chuck accompanied by his son Lee made the trip to Washington along with many other area service veterans.

The experience was unforgettable. “I had never been to Washington before.” Chuck explained. Seeing the memorials through his son Lee’s eyes as well as in person was spectacular. “The Viet Nam Wall was of special interest to me, and the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier was very impressive.” Chuck reflected.

Charles William Capp Jr. was born and raised in South Dakota. He is a retired now after a career in the building trades and some surface mining. He and his wife Sharon were married in Belle Fourche where they raised two children.
