NEWELL—Last Wednesday, June 26, Newell’s High Plains Restaurant & Bar called on the community to help support Ruby Oligmueller through her battle with cancer of the larynx. The restaurant hosted a medical benefit and silent auction for Ruby, whose unfortunate diagnosis was discovered less than one month ago. “Ruby’s been working here for two years, and we came to love her. And we’ll do anything to help her out,” said Braidy Nelson, who also works at the restaurant. “A lot of locals came. It’s nice to know a lot of people love Ruby.”
Donations for the silent auction were plentiful; Nelson said that she and Shelby Scheulke, who organized the event, expected to get two tables worth of items but ended up with four. Auction items ranged from intricate gift baskets to handmade goods and everything in between. Additionally, a free-will donation Goulash supper was served, and donations were accepted all day.
A social media poster describes Ruby as “a wonderful friend who has impacted so many just in the time she has blessed Newell with her friend-to-all demeanor and delicious treats.” That is an apt description; despite her diagnosis, Ruby was all smiles with her grandchildren as they got ice cream during the supper.
As always, the NVN community showed up to support a fellow citizen in need. We will be thinking of Ruby and wish her the best as she undergoes treatment.
