NEWELL-The National Honor Society is made up of students known as the highest in their class and the NHS students who are part of this select group are examples of the leadership found in Newell. Students were honored during the Newell Chapter of the National Honor Society Recognition and Induction held recently.
As NHS Advisor, Kathy Lamphere, encouraged the seniors to look to the future as she told them it had been a wonderful ride during their years in NHS. It’s not an end, but a whole new beginning she pointed out.
“Every ending is a new beginning,” she said.
“You kids mean the world to me,” she continued.
Lamphere will be retiring from Newell School at the end of the school year.
NHS officers began the evening highlighting the four areas of the Society-Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.
Kimberly Johnson spoke to Scholarship. She detailed the commitment to learning and expanding one’s knowledge. A student is willing to spend hours reading and studying, knowing that their work leads to the lasting benefits of a cultivated mind. She advised the students that they should continue to learn even when formal education has ended. Johnson charged the candidates to continually expand their world through opportunities inherent in scholarship.
Leadership is a commitment to learning. Rachel Erk spoke to the students about the importance of Leadership. Leadership should exert a wholesome influence on the school. The real leader strives to train and aid others to reach their common goals of success. Leadership is always needed so it is vital that leadership is meaningful and compelling charge to each member.
BeJae Johnson’s office was Service. It can be established in the routine of the day’s work where many opportunities arise to help others both at school and in the community. She pointed out that a willingness to work for the benefit of those in need is the quality that is sought within the membership of NHS. The National Honor Society is committed to volunteering time and talents to the creation of a better tomorrow.
Character is a force within an individual that distinguishes each person. Shannon Yates spoke to the importance of Character in NHS members. She explained how it creates individuality and goodness. Character guides one through life and grows steadily within. Importantly, Character is achieved and not received. NHS members prove by example the value of respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring and citizenship.
Five new members were inducted into the Newell National Honor Society and welcomed by Kathy Lamphere. Sarah Erk, Michael Lawson, Tayla Neely, Jessica Raisanen, and Jayden Tesch joined as the newest members.
